There is joy and beauty in humble food ingredients. Gareth attempts to draw attention to natural abundance, sunlight, shadows brilliant colour and texture through striking design. It’s his invitation to look at what we have already, right in front of us, not focus on what we don’t have. A lemon doesn’t envy an orange’s ‘orange-ness’, it just tries to be the best version of a lemon it can be in the time it has. We could learn a lot from this.

Ryan Everson’s current body of work delves into the intricate world of graffiti laden, doorways, urban decay, and the concept of palimpsest, all encapsulated in the realm of miniature painting. Through meticulous detail, he aims to capture the essence of forgotten spaces and the stories they silently bare. These weathered thresholds and decaying urban landscapes become his canvas, each layer of paint revealing the history and transformation of these once vibrant places. In his work, he seeks to not only preserve the memory of these spaces, but also to evoke a sense of nostalgia, curiosity and hidden beauty can be found amidst decay.

Ross McCormick obtained a BA in Furniture & Product Design at Nottingham Trent University (2006) and an MA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts (2018). He is currently Artist in Residence at Coventry University.
A principal theme in Ross’ work is ‘the representation and effect of labour’ linking production to the everyday. Influenced by his industrial class roots, he embraces a deconstructivist language that investigates tensions and struggles surrounding a labour economy after postmodernism in an effort to stimulate new ideas around Arts & Engineering.
Through a social realist lens, he often re-surfaces past workers’ lived experience or constructs social sculptural interventions to identify new narratives that engage in a dialogue around process and production. Themes are based around ‘Rights to Protest’, ‘Normative Masculinity’, ‘Immaterial Labour’ and Imperialism. Taking a holistic approach towards the re-use of salvaged automotive readymade objects, he explores the metaphysical relationship between industrial production and spiritual consciousness.

Event Details
European whisky history is a fascinating tale of tradition, innovation, and cross-cultural influences. While Scotland is often hailed as the birthplace of whisky, Europe boasts a diverse and rich whisky-making heritage that has evolved over centuries. As whisky enthusiasts, we embark on a journey to uncover the hidden gems and time-honoured practices that have shaped the European whisky landscape, celebrating the craftsmanship and flavours that make these whiskies truly exceptional.
We welcome Harry Brennan for the second time at Grain & Glass! He is a passionate whisky enthusiast and founder of EuroWhisky. With a background in the whisky industry from his time at the Scotch Whisky Experience and Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Edinburgh, Harry noticed the under-appreciation of European whiskies, despite their undeniable quality. Now, as the driving force behind EuroWhisky, Harry conducts tastings and curates a delightful array of whiskies from various European regions, shedding light on their rich history and outstanding craftsmanship.

Non-denominational Key Hill Cemetery was Birmingham’s first cemetery (not being a church yard) and was formally known as The General Cemetery. Neighbouring Church of England Warstone Lane Cemetery was Birmingham’s second cemetery. Both cemeteries were privately owned. The cemeteries fell into decline when the cemeteries became full and did not generate an income.
Since the 1980’s some of our volunteers have been caring for the cemeteries – finding hidden footpaths and steps, uncovering sunken graves as well as researching the lives of those who rest in these two historic cemeteries.

Walking Tour exploring the plants & fungi of the Jewellery Quarter how they were used in WW2
This walking tour will explore the plants and fungi of the Jewellery quarter how they were used in World WarII.
Join natural science curator Lukas Large for a fascinating in-person event as we delve into the history of the Jewellery Quarter during WW2 that had a huge impact on trade.
Plants previously imported for food, fibres and medicines were much more difficult to obtain and had to be substituted with local species. This led to a huge increase in foraging for useful wild plants.
The aftermath of the war gave a unique opportunity to local botanists to study the plants that sprung up on the bombed sites of the city. Leading to a new appreciation for the flora found in cities.
Discover the plants & fungi that played a crucial role during this time.
The tour will take place inside Warstone Lane cemetery, Vyse Street, near Pitsford Street.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn about the historical significance of these natural elements!
This event is part of the Friends WW2 events for Saturday 4 May.

The Actress Blues club presents:
Ceri Justice is a singer-songwriter from the West Midlands
She started penning songs when she was a schoolgirl and daydreamed about becoming a singer-songwriter
A keen collector of music and all things related, TV music programmes only fuelled this ambition as did the influence of many well-known artists, Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Roxy Music, Steve Harley, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, and many more fired her imagination and desire to write and record her own material
As her record collection grew, so did her love of music and the written word, covering musical genres of pop to punk, country, rock and more besides.
Ceri was never afraid to buck trends and was inspired to try and create a unique sound, within a solid framework of Americana, Blues and Country.
Her sound is underscored by her Irish background with clear Celtic undertones and the title track on her, soon to be released, second album “Walk In Shadow” clearly references this Irish heritage.
Her music continues to gain a global following. As Ceri says “Writing these songs brings its own reward, it is a labour of love”.
Ceri’s ambition was also fuelled by successfully competing in a big nationwide Singer-Songwriter Competition, where Ceri, with no previous musical experience, beat thousands of entries to win a place in the “not quite final” line-up and a live performance in front of some big music industry names, attracting some interest. Not bad considering that competition was held at the famous Marquee Club in London.
Fast forward to “right now” and Ceri sings with her own band, Ceri Justice & The Jury at local gigs in and around Birmingham

Event Details
The art of portraiture dates back at least 5,000 years to ancient Egypt and, up until the invention of photography, was the only way to capture a person’s likeness. Throughout history, portraits have been used as a tool for demonstrating the sitter’s status and importance, as well as to assert dominance over subjects and enemies. However, portraiture and, in particular, self-portraiture, is not always representational but instead may employ abstraction or symbolism to reveal more than just the physical appearance of the subject.
The RBSA Portrait Prize exhibition gives artists working in any medium the opportunity to exhibit their work and win prizes. This year, the RBSA was delighted to extend the scope of the exhibition to include photography and digital artwork.
This year’s exhibition was selected by:
John Devane, RBSA Honorary Professor of Painting; Professor of Painting, Centre of Arts, Memories and Communications, Coventry University
Marta Kochanek, multi-award winning photography artist
Professor Jennifer Powell, Director of The Barber Institute of Fine Arts
The following prizes will be awarded:
First prize £1000 sponsored by GMC
Second prize £500 sponsored by Galliard Apsley Partnership
Third prize £250 sponsored by Judd Medical
Student prize £250 sponsored by RBSA Member
Up to six highly commended certificates will also be awarded

The Coffin Works will be hosting a Death Café in partnership with Brum Yodo during Dying Matters Week on Thursday 9th May. For those new to this, a Death Café is a safe space where people, often strangers, come together to eat cake, drink tea and openly discuss all things about death and dying. It is not a grief support or counselling session; the aim of the café is simply to give people the opportunity to increase their awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their lives. There is no agenda, no cost, no selling of products, just the opportunity to have frank and open conversations with other like minded people.
This is a free event and includes a taster tour of our courtyard and Stamp Shop, which will last approximately 20 minutes. As part of your ticket to our Death Café, we will be serving fresh cake and refreshments.

We’re back! After a small hiatus (ok it turned out to be an entire year but who’s counting?) Social Circle is back and it’s now Social Circle 2.0 – that means more innovations, more amazing campaigns and even more digital chat than you can shake a stick at!
In case you have forgotten (we know, we know it’s been a while) Social Circle was born from monthly get-togethers between friends, where we’d gather round with a few drinks and chat about the latest in social media marketing. We wanted to be better for ourselves, for our clients, and because we just really love digital media.
So, we decided to open the circle to other digital marketers, with the goal to take social to the next level and share inspirational, instant, and actionable insights.
We’ll be meeting Upstairs at 1000 Trades, 16 Frederick St, Birmingham B1 3HE on Thursday 9th May, at 6pm GMT.
Here’s how it will go…
➡️ We’ll start with brief introductions
➡️ We’ll run through new innovations and trends in social media marketing
➡️ We’ve got a guest talk from TBA
➡️ We’ll open it up to the circle to hear about any trends, campaigns or innovations for 2024 that are getting you excited
➡️ We’ll likely stay for another drink and continue networking
Address:
Upstairs at 1000 Trades, 16 Frederick St, Birmingham B1 3HE
Everyone is welcome to join the discussions so that we can learn from each other. Every month we share the insights across our social channels and also on our podcast (yep that is back too!) after the event so nothing shared in the Circle is forgotten.
So join our Circle, grab a drink, and get ready for Social Circle 2.0! #YouCanSitWithUs

St Paul’s are excited to welcome TØKIO M¥ERS as part of his tour ‘Awake but Dreaming’.
Please click here https://www.axs.com/uk/events/527323/tokio-myers-tickets for tickets and more information.
TØKIO M¥ERS is proud to announce his DEBUT solo classical piano tour, ‘Awake but Dreaming’
commencing May 2024 in the UK. Tour dates below.
Tøkio will be performing his new solo classical album featuring an array of beautiful and reflective pieces
of original music inspired by the birth of his first daughter. Tokio will also include stripped back
arrangements of his most popular works; released & unreleased.
For the first time ever, Tøkio will be adding selections of traditional classical music to this tour –
showcasing not only his technical prowess, but also inviting you to experience which artists inspired &
influenced the TØKIO M¥ERS we all love and know today.
“If I hadn’t gone to dark places in life and explored as much as possible the extremities of music, then I
could’ve never understood how beautiful & perfect simple music is – I’ve learnt after all these years that
my training and experimenting were essential, in order for me to finally understand, appreciate, and truly
feel how to play the most simplest of pieces – it feels like an awakening.”, says Tøkio.
ABOUT TOKIO MYERS:
– After capturing the nation as Winner of Britain’s Got Talent in 2017, TØKIO M¥ERS was dubbed a ‘Rising
Star’ by Simon Cowell. His sense of originality and musicianship garnered immense praise from both the
judges and public, subsequently earning him a record deal with Syco Entertainment.
– Tokio went on to reach top 5 status in the UK official album charts with his debut cinematic album ‘Our
Generation’, the only pianist ever to achieve this feat.
– The album went gold, selling over 100,000 copies in the UK alone.
– He has become one of the most innovative artists of today, creating his own unique artistic lane. His
alchemist approach to writing and performing classical & contemporary music is what sets Tøkio apart
from his peers. Drawing on his life experiences, Tokio and turns them into cleverly constructed
compositions, which seamlessly integrates music from the past and present.
Since his success, Tøkio has performed sold out UK and Ireland Tours in the UK & Ireland including the
iconic London ‘Printworks’ venue for his ‘Our Generation’ tour.
He has performed twice at the London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall, supported by none other than the
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Classic FM Live.
As a Classic Brit Award Winner for PPL’s Breakthrough ‘Artist of the Year’ he has co-produced the ‘Artists
for Grenfell’ charity single in support of The London Community Foundation. He has performed to a
sellout audience at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, and performed at the Fifa Fan Festival for the World
Cup in Qatar 2022 with 60,000 attendees in total.
More recently he has received critical acclaim, collaborating with Jaeger Le Coultre as part of the ‘Made
of Makers’ programme – which led to Tøkio featuring in Vogue Hong Kong, GQ Japan, New York Times,
Culture L.A, as well as seeing him perform in Shanghai China, Los Angeles U.S, & London U.K.
Lastly, it gives us great pleasure to announce that TØKIO M¥ERS will also be releasing a series of
production albums, “a trilogy” Tøkio says, towards the end of 2024 into 2025 – these albums will feature
piano, gospel choir, orchestra and more as a continuation from his debut album ‘Our Generation’.

Returning to Birmingham for ONE WEEK ONLY before its National Tour and London run
She died. Her curse lives on. Do you dare join us for the most terrifying tale yet? Book now for the best seats and prices.
Due to popular demand, the national tour of James Williams’ critically acclaimed ghost play launches at the Blue Orange Theatre for a strictly limited run this May and tickets are now on sale.
Brace yourselves for the ghost story experience of the year. From the creators of the sell-out ghost plays, The Wicked Lady and The Orphanage, comes the most terrifying tale yet.
Blood will have blood on the Witches’ Sabbath. Disbelieved by some, avoided by many. It is those who know the most about the unspeakable horrors of this place who say the least.
Erin and Sam soon realise that their trip to Torhill Wood will not pass without their fair share of witchcraft and murder – can they make it out alive or have they disturbed too much?
The unnerving history, weaved with screams and torture, leave all who visit clutching the unshakeable feeling that the curse can only be kept buried for so long. Tempers boil over in this melting pot of witch trials and rumours.
With fear and dread consuming them, this terrifying ghost story transcends time and place until all those who enter are left scrambling for a way out.
This production contains moments of extreme shock and tension and is recommended for those aged 14+. Strobe lighting, loud noises and strong language are present at points throughout.

Event Details
This exhibition showcases work by the late sculptor Tom Millard RBSA and practising artist Melanie Keevil.
Tom Millard RBSA gained inspiration for his sculptures and constructions from the natural world, in all its forms and changing seasons. His journey around the southwest coastline, especially where the land meets sea, particularly fascinated him, as did the landscape of the Midlands, the Malvern hills, the locks and canal system, and the crumbling industrial landscape.
Tom was an art educator of students of all ages and he met ceramicist Melanie Keevil when, as a young mum, she volunteered to help with groups of nursery children. Melanie’s sculpture and wall art is also inspired by urban and rural landscapes.
Tom and Melanie’s shared passions of nature and nurture, the human form, and its relationship to the natural world, which subsequently led to the first of their joint exhibitions in 2010. Two further collaborative exhibitions followed, with Tom and Melanie’s artistic relationship continuing through to the end of his life. Tom Millard was a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists for over 20 years and sadly passed away in November 2023.

Expect songs from Gwen McCrae to Chaka Khan, from Donna Summer to Aretha Franklin, to name a few. Elle-J is backed by some of Birmingham’s elite musicians – come and enjoy some music for your soul.
DJ Pete Sherriff is compère for the night, playing a mix of tracks and videos, old & new, and introducing the live music performances at 9pm from our resident piano duo. The band will be on stage at around 11pm.
