Event Details
The art of portraiture dates back at least 5,000 years to ancient Egypt and, up until the invention of photography, was the only way to capture a person’s likeness. Throughout history, portraits have been used as a tool for demonstrating the sitter’s status and importance, as well as to assert dominance over subjects and enemies. However, portraiture and, in particular, self-portraiture, is not always representational but instead may employ abstraction or symbolism to reveal more than just the physical appearance of the subject.
The RBSA Portrait Prize exhibition gives artists working in any medium the opportunity to exhibit their work and win prizes. This year, the RBSA was delighted to extend the scope of the exhibition to include photography and digital artwork.
This year’s exhibition was selected by:
John Devane, RBSA Honorary Professor of Painting; Professor of Painting, Centre of Arts, Memories and Communications, Coventry University
Marta Kochanek, multi-award winning photography artist
Professor Jennifer Powell, Director of The Barber Institute of Fine Arts
The following prizes will be awarded:
First prize £1000 sponsored by GMC
Second prize £500 sponsored by Galliard Apsley Partnership
Third prize £250 sponsored by Judd Medical
Student prize £250 sponsored by RBSA Member
Up to six highly commended certificates will also be awarded

The Birmingham Marketing Meetup is an informal, friendly place for the marketers of Birmingham to meet, learn, and share knowledge with one another. Come in ‘listen’ not ‘sell’ mode 🙂
We’re back in our lovely new venue for this one, at the Assay Studios in Newhall St. We just want to get together, say hello, have a chat, and have a nice time.
Think of this as a community event, where the focus is very much on you meeting other people in a chilled out friendly space. We’ll chat over food and drink, listen to an inspirational speaker or two, chat some more, and go home buzzing with new contacts and new ideas.
Let’s have a lovely night in the company of some amazin’ people.
——————–
Speaker: to be confirmed!
——————–
The format of the night:
6:00 pm – doors open – drinks, networking, and smiles
6:30 pm – introduction and talks begin
7:00 pm – talks finish, networking, listening, saying hello, and positively lovely people
7:45 pm – end of the night – you leave with new contacts and fresh ideas

And finally…
This is a donation ticketed event. The ticket price is yours to choose, from £3 to £30 🙂
We of course understand that these are tough times, so if you are experiencing financial hardship and cannot afford the minimum donation amount, please reach out to el@themarketingmeetup.com and we’ll find a ticket for you (provided capacity hasn’t already been reached!) 🙂
Please let your marketing friends and colleagues know about this group too, I hope to build it into a great resource for the community over the coming months and years. Attendance will be taken at this event. If you sign up but don’t show up, this has a knock on effect on event arrangements. If it happens 3 times, you’re outta here! This is simply a measure to allow appropriate respect to the organisers, speakers, sponsors, and your fellow community members 🙂

Returning to Birmingham for ONE WEEK ONLY before its National Tour and London run
She died. Her curse lives on. Do you dare join us for the most terrifying tale yet? Book now for the best seats and prices.
Due to popular demand, the national tour of James Williams’ critically acclaimed ghost play launches at the Blue Orange Theatre for a strictly limited run this May and tickets are now on sale.
Brace yourselves for the ghost story experience of the year. From the creators of the sell-out ghost plays, The Wicked Lady and The Orphanage, comes the most terrifying tale yet.
Blood will have blood on the Witches’ Sabbath. Disbelieved by some, avoided by many. It is those who know the most about the unspeakable horrors of this place who say the least.
Erin and Sam soon realise that their trip to Torhill Wood will not pass without their fair share of witchcraft and murder – can they make it out alive or have they disturbed too much?
The unnerving history, weaved with screams and torture, leave all who visit clutching the unshakeable feeling that the curse can only be kept buried for so long. Tempers boil over in this melting pot of witch trials and rumours.
With fear and dread consuming them, this terrifying ghost story transcends time and place until all those who enter are left scrambling for a way out.
This production contains moments of extreme shock and tension and is recommended for those aged 14+. Strobe lighting, loud noises and strong language are present at points throughout.

Event Details
Join The Lakes Distillery at Grain & Glass for a whisky tasting on 24th May to explore the design-led whiskymaking approach adopted by The Lakes Single Malt. Taking inspiration from Cognac’s cellarmasters, they have taken the concept of élevage – a proactive involvement in whisky’s maturation – to create intriguing layers of flavour. Hemil Haria, from the Lakes Distillery, will be showcasing an exciting rich and indulgent new release, Galáxia and you’ll have the opportunity to sample the award-winning finale of The Whiskymaker’s Reserve series, No.7, alongside four other single malts from their collection.

Event Details
This exhibition showcases work by the late sculptor Tom Millard RBSA and practising artist Melanie Keevil.
Tom Millard RBSA gained inspiration for his sculptures and constructions from the natural world, in all its forms and changing seasons. His journey around the southwest coastline, especially where the land meets sea, particularly fascinated him, as did the landscape of the Midlands, the Malvern hills, the locks and canal system, and the crumbling industrial landscape.
Tom was an art educator of students of all ages and he met ceramicist Melanie Keevil when, as a young mum, she volunteered to help with groups of nursery children. Melanie’s sculpture and wall art is also inspired by urban and rural landscapes.
Tom and Melanie’s shared passions of nature and nurture, the human form, and its relationship to the natural world, which subsequently led to the first of their joint exhibitions in 2010. Two further collaborative exhibitions followed, with Tom and Melanie’s artistic relationship continuing through to the end of his life. Tom Millard was a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists for over 20 years and sadly passed away in November 2023.

Learn how to make a pair of silver cufflinks or earrings in our bright and shiny jewellery making workshop in Birmingham. You will learn to make a patterned pair of silver drop earrings, in your own chosen shape and texture. A unique and personalised piece of jewellery for you to wear home at the end of the course or to give away as a gift. In fact, this class would make an amazing gift or experience day to spend together!
This jewellery making course is suitable for complete beginners, or those who have attended a jewellery experience day elsewhere. It takes place on a Saturday daytime from 10.00-17.00, with a 1 hour break for lunch and plenty of nice cafes nearby to choose from. Step by step, you will learn texturing, drilling, saw-piercing, filing/buffing, wirework, and polishing as you make and finish your earrings. The tutor will make a pair of silver earrings alongside you, and will use their piece to demonstrate each step. There will be the option to choose to make a pair of cufflinks instead of earrings for an extra £10 (choose this option by entering your required number of spots in the +£10 box), with the soldering for these done by the tutor – you’ll be shown how, but it’s a tricky soldering job for a first attempt.

Following in an RBSA tradition that dates back to 1814, the RBSA Summer Show is an open call exhibition that welcomes submissions from artists working in any media. However, unlike that first exhibition which was only open to artists from within a 30-mile radius of the city, today the RBSA receives entries from artists based all around the world.
Artists are given the opportunity to showcase their work in Birmingham’s foremost contemporary art gallery and, for those exhibiting at the RBSA Gallery for the first time, it can signify the beginning of their journey with one of the oldest art societies in the country.
The RBSA Summer Show takes place over all three floors of the Gallery, making it our largest open call exhibition of the year. With almost 250 artworks on display, the Summer Show is a celebration of a wide variety of media and techniques showcasing work by artists of enormous talent.
This year’s exhibition will be selected by:
Simon Conolly RBSA
Ed Isaacs RBSA
John Scott Martin PPRBSA
Joan Sharma RBSA
Selection of work will be based on quality and interest.
The exhibition will be opened by Michael Harrison, the President of the Royal Society of British Artists.
The following prizes will be awarded:
First prize £500
Second prize £250
Up to six highly commended certificates will also be awarded
Prizes generously donated by Clive Beardsmore, Friend of the RBSA.

Event Details
Bladnoch, revitalized under owner David Prior, resumed production in 2017, crafting a classic lowland style spirit – grassy, floral, and elegant. Established in 1817 by the McClelland brothers, its journey saw various owners, styles, and even a period of peated production. Despite turbulent times, including mothballing and changes in ownership, Bladnoch endured. In 2015, Australian businessman David Prior acquired the distillery, initiating extensive renovations. Nearly two years later, in June 2017, Bladnoch celebrated its bicentenary with a grand reopening, marking a new chapter in its storied history.
We welcome Bladnoch’s recent addition to their team, the UK’s new Brand Ambassador Mark Rannoch! Prior to this role, he spent nearly 3 years at London’s esteemed Soho Whisky Club, where interactions with various brand ambassadors enriched his understanding of whisky craftsmanship. These experiences, coupled with hosting private tastings, have finely tuned his ability to convey whisky expertise to broader audiences.

Event Details
As part of our ‘Stepping Through The Past’ collaboration with Ian Braisby, join on our Victorian Birmingham walking tour to learn about Birmingham’s golden age in the 19th Century.
As one of the world’s leading manufacturing cities, it also had a widespread reputation as a place of tolerance and progressive ideas, and as a model for effective local governance. On this tour, we will be taking a close look at what remains of the Victorian city and finding out what the buildings and streets that remain can tell us about how the city developed. Covering industry, religion, politics, education and much more, we will be admiring the architecture and discovering the people who lived and worked in Birmingham in the Victorian age.
Following the walking tour, you’ll receive a tour of the preserved manufactory of just one of those thousand trades: coffin furniture. Discovering how this Victorian factory developed into the world-class business it became, even supplying the royal undertakers with coffin handles, ornaments and shrouds for the best part of a century.
This package tour includes:
1pm – 3pm, Victorian Birmingham walking tour [meet on outside St Chad’s Cathedral, St Chad’s Queensway]
3pm – 3.30pm, Cuppa and cake in the Coffin Works’ Casting Shop Cafe [A hot/cold drink and a cake included per ticket]
3.30pm – 4.45pm, A full guided tour of the Coffin Works itself
Tickets are £25 per person.
The day will largely be spent outdoors, no matter the weather, so please dress accordingly.
