Event Details

Boulton would be proud” provides an overview of the long history and success of Assay Office Birmingham since it was founded as a result of Matthew Boulton’s efforts in 1773.

The talk will take a glimpse back into the early history of the Office, the reasons Boulton fought so hard for it and the factors which have driven its growth and survival over the past 246 years.

The main focus will be on the last two, fast moving, decades and the changing market and landscape which have required the Assay Office to reinvent itself as the AnchorCert Group in a brand-new building, within the Jewellery Quarter.

The Assay Office is the last remaining enterprise founded by Boulton and he would indeed be proud of the continuing passion, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit, which drives the Assay Office from strength to strength.

The talk will be delivered by Marion Wilson who was a Director of the Birmingham Assay Office during one of its most significant periods, from 2000 until 2019

Visitors will also be among the first to appreciate the impressive ‘Guardian Timpiece’, recently installed above the foyer. A unique collaboration between Birmingham’s most gifted metalworkers and academics has created this stunning 21st century piece which embraces art and science and celebrates the enduring innovation, creativity and skill for which the Jewellery Quarter is so famous.
